A Post Apocalyptic Tale.In the year, 2017 a plague decimates the global human population with a survival rate of only one in six hundred. One nation after another is
infected and accusations of bio-terrorism lead to nuclear war. The Western Hemisphere is spared from any nukes but eventually the plague arrives in the USA leaving only a half million alive. A three-year nuclear winter kills even more. Social structure is nonexistent and anarchy is prevalent.
It is in this world that Jake Markett must travel to a refuge in South Georgia, a bastion of hope and safety for the few survivors who make it there.
Walking down a rural road in the post apocalyptic world of 2026, Jake Markett hears the sound of children screaming in terror and goes to their aid. From that moment, he and the three black children he rescues are on a dangerous journey to a place of sanctuary.
Their path is hindered by the arrival of a paramilitary gang led by John Saint. They have to fight every inch of the way to the facility a little girl nicknames, Heaven.
As they travel, they rescue others from Saint's men. Jake falls in love with one
of the women he saves. This is a story of survival and what it means to be human.
There is a Science Fiction thread woven through the pages that is essential to the plot but is not the dominate theme.
This novel contains graphic language / violence and Action Packed Excitement.

This is a well written book with an excellent storyline and great character development. This book has some scfi, good guys, and really bad guys. Jake and Beth and the gang are my new heroes. How do you survive when you go from the 21st century to the early 1800s in the blink of an eye. Then a plague wipes out a lot of the earth's population and then countries start throwing nukes at each other - this is the world Jakes finds himself in. What would you do? This book is not worth reviewing. But I will say a few words to justify my statement. The author is TOO preoccupied with the race of each character. Who cares what race a person may be? A character's race does nothing to advance the story in the way that McDonald does it.
Of course in some books a person's race has a purpose maybe providing insight into their background or thinking.
Camel Jockeys should always be id'd so we can watch them die.
I read "Hard Road" to the point of 55% according to my and then went to another book. I will not bother finishing "Hard Road"
Terry McDonald has written a post a post apocalyptic story like no other I've read. It has many of the usual twists you'll find in this genre but with a bit of Sci Fi and a raft of unexpected turns. The characters are well developed and well loved. The people who populate this ruined world are not the card board cutouts we often find in this genre.
Terry's characters are on the road to a "better place" - they are forced to kill evil people along the way but they also take the time to smell the roses and explore the question of survival for what purpose?
His writing is light on politics and long on morality and love for the human race. This book dreams of a better world raising out of the ashes of a decimated land. Terry's writing is first rate and I look forward to his next book.
I would also strongly recommend "Annie Higgins" - a stand alone book from the same world as "Hard Road". Terry McDonald is an author I will be following closely and I intend to purchase every book he publishes.

I am an avid reader of science fiction, military fiction and action novels, as well as the occasional fantasy. I have learned in 50 years of reading that a good author can make anything interesting and a mediocre author can make the end of the world boring.
This story is interesting from the first paragraph and becomes more so with each chapter. One of the things I find refreshing is that the protaganist is trying to act ethically, but he isn't an idiot about taking risks or a fool about human nature.
This was the first book by Terry McDonald that I read and it struck me as being well-written and creative. After finishing Hard Road I read Gran de Daddy and now I am looking for more. I will continue to buy his books and hope he continues writing more.
This book is pretty well researched, characters are well developed. It certainly holds the reader's interest. I would have to advise the author that the pups of one breeding pair of dogs does not make a genetically diverse breeding program.
This was an enjoyable read with some outstanding characters. It had some good ideas as to a new way to hit an apocalypse story. It is a strange way to mix a disaster novel with a science-fiction novel. Looking forward to the sequel
Exciting, insightful, provocative...fun are just a few words to describe this book. As always I learned something from this book. Another quality book that was accurately researched an put to word. I am looking forward to the next installment. This book has MOVIE written all over it.....buy it....
Judge on the basis of being a preachy moralistic yarn that spun slowly, unevenly, and boringly. Why do authors think they need to teach us etiquette along with political correctness after we have actually spent money on their product? Well people, not again on this author for me.
