I especially appreciate how Katy Henry develops her characters' friendship and respect for each other, even though they are all so different. Through their relationships, they begin to reflect on their own beliefs and accept each other. And in doing so, Henry invites her readers to do the same.

Personally, I identify more with Michael's world view, but I found myself appreciating Lucy's perspective the most. She's a fierce feminist, and she's also a committed Catholic--and both sides fit together in her well-rounded character. Religion can bring comfort, faith and support to people, and Michael sees this in Lucy. But religion has also been used throughout history to enforce social norms and uphold the existing power structures. Above all, I appreciate how Henry asks readers to separate these two strands and think about what they value.

Drop an atheist who's already feeling betrayed by his father after a fourth move, into a Catholic school near the beginning of his senior year, introduce him to a devout, but smart girl who knows the Catholic religion and her school are flawed, mix in a Wiccan girl, a gay Jewish boy and another teen who just wants to wear his cape to school and what do you have? The beginning of Heretic's Anonymous. Michael's already angry at his frequently absent dad for this latest move. He's been promised it wasn't going to happen again after three prior uprootings. The dress code at the school, coupled with the daily helpings of religious hypocrisy are just gasoline on a poorly contained flame. When He meets Lucy, immediate intrigue soon turns to attraction as well as a desire to shake things up at the school. How that comes about and what Michael learns about himself, the flexibility of faith and how families that don't always work can come together when it really needs to happen, make for a great young adult story.
My Review This was one of the funniest books I have read in some time. If you don't mind religions being chatted about in a funny way then this is a book you should totally read!! I could not put this down and within reading the first 10 pages I knew I needed to own this book!

I laughed out loud during the entire thing and I just could not stop reading until I was done. I read this book at 80 pages an hour and man it was just that good. This one centers around a group of kids that are forced to attend a religious school when most of them are not Catholic.

This book does the religious aspect in such a way that it covers a lot of different religions and talks a lot about theology and what is wrong with religion. I loved every second of this book and can not wait to see what else this author gives us as the years go by!
Do I Recommend this book? Yes, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a deep but funny title!

This book is simply amazing for starters. I bought this book shortly after it was released and it has taken me less than a week to read it. "Heretics Anonymous" is Katie Henry's debut novel but it does not read like one, it is a solid story with fleshed out characters that will draw you in from the first sentence.
328 pages for me is a short book, usually what I consider to be a "filler Book" or a quick read in between my bigger novels but this book is honestly one of the best books I've read in a long time. It contains a message that I think we all need in of in 2018 and that is the idea unity.
At the center of the novel is a group of friends that attend a Catholic high school together and their goal is to build a forum where outspoken and freethinking individuals can meet without scrutiny and judgement from their conservative teachers and students. I won't give too much away concerning the plot, but expect a lot of discussion concerning older Catholic views and beliefs.
Important topics discussed here include abstinence-only sexual education, homophobia, and family dynamics. This are heavy topics, but they are discussed in a way that feels open with multiple standpoints and opinions. Nobody is only defined by their religious beliefs (or lack thereof), and "Heretics Anonymous" is a shining example of that statement.
In short, I highly recommend this book.
17-year-old, Micheal just moved for the 4th time in 10 years. Michael's dad works an intense job that keeps the family moving and Michael's dad traveling. Micheal is very upset for this most recent move because not only did his parents promise this wouldn't happen again but he is an atheist that his been enrolled in a private Catholic high school.

On his first day he mentally mocks the school and is left feeling like an outcast, until he meets the smart and bold Lucy. Lucy is an outspoken Columbian girl and is devout to her belief in catholicism but still believes the system needs to change. Lucy and Michael become fast friends.

As soon as Micheal gains Lucy's trust she introduced them to her "study group" that meets in the basement called Heretics Anonymous. Lucy and her collection of friends all get together to discuss their differing beliefs that are oppressed in a high school that has little acceptance for things outside the institutional and religious guidelines of the school. So they decides to make a difference and change things that will liberate the school.

This seems like it is a book about religion but that is only the landscape that this story is painted on. Catholicism has a ridged doctrine in most settings and it is the best young adult setting to debate issues that include the limited acceptance of individual differences.

This book is about being able to coexist along side a religion that you don't necessarily agree with fully and it is also about love.

Contemporary isn't my go to but this was a well written and enlightening read.
