All Tara Daston wanted was a fun night out clubbing. But fun nights don't normally include dying and waking three days later as one of the undead. She tries to adapt but her adaptation is made difficult when a friend is killed by something neither vampire or lycan. More killings happen and Tara is drawn into the investigation where she meets vampire Tom Duncan and the rest of the preternatural investigation team. This was a good mystery/thriller and really didn't need the paranormal aspect. The vampire bits seemed just a little pasted on just to be trendy. The mystery was good. I'd read more by this author.

Midnight Reflections Katrina Michaels 9781600761300 Books Reviews

Now, I must admit this is my first vampire book and I was a little hesitant to begin, thinking it would be full of cliches and unlikeable characters. I couldn't have been more wrong! Michaels has created an alternate world, inhabited by vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and all kinds of other magic-users. The story begins with a murder and the action does not let up until the very end. I found myself trying to figure out the identity of the killer throughout the entire story and I was still surprised at the end! Michaels pulled off a perfect twist that is so integral to the mystery genre.

The characters are quirky, endearing, and made me laugh out loud at times. The book follows the main character, Tara, as she is (involuntarily) changed into a vampire and gets wrapped up in a serial killer case. The growth of her character throughout the story is fantastic. If you are a fan of the mystery or vampire genre (or even if you're not!), I would definitely recommend this book.
Author Katrina Michaels has a refreshing twist on the traditional vampire mythos. Out in the open, the supernaturals mingle with society. They of course must follow some rules to keep everything happy. She maintains the "can't go inside unless invited" rule, and Vampires are still relegated to the night, as usual; but, the fact that things are in a bit of harmony is a nice thing. That is due to The Preternatural Agency.

The story opens with Tara having a fun night out at the club with her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend. Upon leaving, she dumps him and he takes it pretty badly. He attacks her and bludgeons her to death. Thankfully, the club they were at was one that caters to the undead. He takes her inside and convinces a vampire to turn her, so he can escape being blamed for her death.

Though she didn't want to be turned, she takes it in stride. I have to say I love Tara. She's a character you can really enjoy. Upon awaking as a vampire she finds she's now child to a 300 year old Vampire, Alexander, who wants to be a father again. He misses the companionship and ability to pass on his knowledge. He's actually very caring, for a vamp, and helps to bring Tara up to speed and teach her how to take care of herself. Which is something she will need to take on the true villain of this story.

Tara's ex ends up dead and the mystery surrounding his as well as other deaths leads Tara to The Preternatural Agency and agent Tom who seems to get in her way, or is it the other way around, LoL? I'd rather not give too much away, suffice to say this was a fun read, a nice blend of Urban Fantasy and Mystery. I am looking forward to more from this author!
Tara Datson just wanted to go out to have a good night at a club. What she got was a new life as a vampire. Her Date in a heated argument accidentally kills Tara, fear of her family's reaction he convinces a nearby vampire to urn her to save her. Only to save his own but and get the job from Tara's uncle he had been dating Tara to get.
In this world Katrina Michaels has created supernatural's are out in the open and accepted . So they need their own department in law enforcement to deal with their Criminals and crimes that the regular police department is not equipped to deal with. So the PIA was created. The handsome ex-cop Tom Duncan leads this team and is forced to take an interest in Tara once she becomes involved in a murder investigation he is working on.
Tara's friend's boy friend was murdered and by some creature, that not even the PIA can pinpoint what it is. Tara just can't let this go, she felt that she needed to get involved and help find the murderer. Much to her surprise the murder found an interest in her too and now has set his sights on her and his sending her messages to her letting her know that he is aware of her interest in his murders.
Now Tom must try and solve these murders without getting Tara killed in the process. With no leads and all but no evidence to help locate any suspect this may be the toughest case he has ever delt with.
I enjoyed this book it was different from other books I read. It had the whole CSI feel to it. With all the Evidence collecting , talking to witnesses and following leads. It keeps you in suspense the whole time, wanting to know more about this killer and wanting the characters to find him. I enjoyed all the characters and how they interacted with each other. My favorite characters are Charlie the handsome werewolf cowboy, And Marco the Owner of the bar Tara works at. The best part is the twist at the end that I just did not see coming.
I hope to read more about these characters in the future.
Katrina Michaels' thriller Midnight Reflections offers exciting and new ideas where unnatural creatures are concerned. The Preternatural Agency is a great idea and I love the characters and their quirky supernatural "gifts" in this book. I don't want to give away too much, because I hate when other reviewers do that, but vampires working alongside humans offers an interesting twist. Check this one out. It was the money!
