This book is full of well written scenes. It's too standoffish from the characters for me to really like them, which is good for me because it likes to kill them. The things that work poorly for me in this story are the larger aspects of the plot. The concept of the unification war and its outcome didn't seem very believable. The notion that a bunch of telepaths who want to be left alone would attempt to achieve that goal by living in a big fancy building near a large city and only using their ability commercially and as it applies to the sort of fights that happen in action TV shows doesn't ring true to me. Likewise, the aftermath of a tactical nuke used adjacent to NYC. It's like thinking I'm seeing a bell made of polished metal, and then ringing it and finding out it's a shiny surface over plastic. Because the larger aspects of the plot came across as false, the long periods of exposition felt more like wasted rather than invested time. However, each scene, taken without outside context, seemed very well done.

Daniel Keys Moran is one of my top 3 living science fiction authors. His work is consistent . His plots are fun & very well thought out. He has built his foundations for the Continuing Time on the works of the best & most loved in this genre. His thoughts & beliefs may not be your thoughts & beliefs, but everyman (everyone) is entitled to that which makes them unique. I view his work as art. When I read it, it moves me.
I've read "The Long Run" at least three times and "Emerald Eyes" and "The Last Dancer" each once. They are all fantastic, but I have one burning question - Where is The AI War listed as a completed work in the inside cover of "Emerald Eyes" new edition. This has to be the new volume on Trent the Uncatchable. The "Storyteller" has already told that he will die and then come back before disappearing into space and he has warned of the threat of an "AI War" so it figures that this volume would be the book we've been waiting for, originally promised to be completed by 1993.
So much happens in each of the volumes that you really have to check back and forth to see who the players are and who they will become, but the work as a whole is fascinating. I'd commend it to any sci-fi fan like myself. It's the best series since Gordon R Dickson finished the "Dorsai Saga".
I enjoyed all of the author's stories of the Continuing Time when they first came out in print. I recently repurchased and re-read on and still enjoy. Ironically, Emerald Eyes is my least favorite of the lot--primarily because I would have preferred it to be expanded to give more back story. Given how richly Moran paints his universe in subsequent books, Emerald Eyes is very clearly an earlier effort from an author who continues to improve. Read this now as a prelude to his further five-star stories.
One of the BEST sci-fi books of all time! I first read this book about 15 years ago when it first came out. It, along with The Long Run and The Last Dancer, is definitely one of the best books that I've ever read. These are really the first great cyberpunk books in my mind. Every time I go to the book store I check to see if there's a new book out by Moran. Far better than Gibson and right up there with Neal Stephenson. I wish that some publisher would pick up Daniel Keys Moran and give us more of this great universe.
Characters that you realy care about and a plot that forces you to stay up all night long to see what's going to happen next are the reason that my original copy was worn ragged as I forced all my friends to read this series. Ask anyone who's read his books and you'll have to gag them to get them to stop praising his books. I liked it so much that I bought two copies of the whole limited edition series including Armageddon Blues which is not part of the series but is great for it's ideas. The writing in Armageddon Blues is not quite as polished as Emerald Eyes and the others but it's still a great read.
This is one of those rare stories that takes place in the near enough future with characters that are real enough that you really care what happens to them, and you have a sense that this could be the future that we will all experience in our lifetime. It's full of things like a reverse microwave to instantly cool things down that you wish you had in your own kitchen.
If you can't afford to buy this book go ask your local library to buy it. Just make sure that you READ this book!
True story. I wished deeply for something to read. Book fiends sometimes they hit a wall where they think they've read everything good (such ego). Anyway, I almost gave up and then my wish was granted I stumbled upon this epic series. So stoked!

Really strong writing, spectacular characters (good and bad), superb plotting and pacing, and cutting edge ideas. I found stuff from Gavin G Smith's newest great series (involving time, space, elites) in these books first.

If you like Richard K Morgan and Peter Watts and Ann Leckie and all the other very best, you will really dig this.
I have to preface this review with a simple statement. I love this book. It is not perfect but it is super enjoyable. Moran does a great job of world building and his characters are interesting. And there are some sequences late in the book that are amazing, particularly the raid.
But there are notable.....gaps. Places where it feels like there were just a few words left out and the reader is left slightly out of the narrative and left to find their own way back in. When it's gripping its REALLY gripping but there are a few rough patches where it felt too much was left to the imagination and a few scraps of info would have helped things along.
That said it's an incredibly enjoyable read despite a few dry spots and you pretty much are required to read it if you want to make any sense at all of the followup "The Long Run" which is still one of my favorite books of all time. I give this book four stars only so I can reserve the much deserved 5 star for the "Long Run" It's amazing. I'm currently re-reading that one for the zillionth time before embarking on a quick skim of "The Last Dancer" before FINALLY taking on the long awaited AI War book One ""The Big Boost"
