If They Can't Take A Joke Confrontational Humor For The Casual Bibliophile Tom Waters 9781434300058 Books

Up to this point I've never reviewed a single book, ever. However, in this case it seems I'm the first one here and I think it deserves a word or three.

The acerbic wit of Tom Waters in this collection of essays is immensely entertaining. The author has a voice that is distinctly Buffalo in tone, instantly recognizable to one such as myself who grew up in the area and recently was forced to return. That said, never setting foot in or
knowing anybody from Western New York should take nothing away from enjoying and relating to the content. It's simply a fact that many Buffalo-born people have a natural way with sarcasm, no doubt baked in by the cold, dark weather and economic hardship. It's a rare treat for such sharp
to find itself bound in print.

I picked this read up at a local independent, on the heels of Hell's Angels, by one of my favorite authors, Hunter S. Thompson. Tom Waters channels a bit of that Gonzo journalist in an everyday, working man's sort of way. I read Born Pissed years ago, and the author has made a ton of progress in his writing style and skill since then. The snack-sized essays cover a wide range of topics including relationships, food and drink, being a writer, work, and much more. Ordinary subject matter gets extraordinary high sarcasm treatment. The piece about the Buick beater car he had terrible luck owning is absolutely precious. Tom does not hold back his opinion on any topic, launching full-frontal assaults that are not for the faint-of-heart. Like all good satire, it's not just a bunch of cheap shots to get a laugh, but adds the value of real, honest insight. I can't say the ideas are entirely new, but they eloquently confirm the familiar in a way I never thought to find words for in my own head.

As someone who aspires to be a writer one day, I feel like this book is chief among many things happening in my current life that have inspired me to get off the couch and pick up my pen. Much more so than books written to supposedly get one to do that very thing.

One final thought, any readers who are easily offended should get this book immediately in order to become desensitized.
